Memoirs kept as a diary by Rev. John Pierce of the First Parish of Brookline, Mass. The eighteen volumes (including one volume of "memorabilia") contain death notices and sketches of other ministers, Harvard classmates of the Class of 1797, and others; notes on attendance at annual Harvard commencements and public exhibitions, conventions of Congregational ministers, dedications of churches and other institutions; and attendance at numerous meetings of local societies and clubs, among them the Mass. Bible Society, Phi Beta Kappa, Thursday lectures, Society for Propagating the Gospel Among the Indians and Others in North America, various temperance societies, Dudleian lectures at Harvard, and the Mass. Congregational Charitable Society. (Cont'd) The volumes also contain notes on various journeys and visits with individuals, his work as a minister, Boston ministers, and Harvard classmates; and copies of letters. Also included in the collection is one volume of Pierce's sermons (1800-1811) and another containing orations by others before Phi Beta Kappa and Harvard public exhibitions.

John Pierce (1773-1849) was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, and graduated from Harvard College in 1793. He accepted an invitation to become the pastor of the First Church in Brookline, Massachusetts, and was ordained on March 15, 1797. In 1798, he married Abigail Lovel, who died in 1800. In 1802, he married Lucy Tappan, and he and Lucy were married for 47 years and had 10 children. Pierce was the sole pastor of the First Church in Brookline for 50 years.
